More pictures from the vintage series!
In your post Vintage 3, you have a picture of a young man who is naked standing in front of a fireplace and a small TV set. I happen to know the history of that picture and I thought you would like to know about it.
The person in the picture is the brother of my cousin’s husband. The picture was photographed in 1956 by one of the subject’s sisters. This might be difficult for you to believe if you are young but in their family back then it was their normal procedure for the male adolescents of the family to take baths before bedtime and then stay naked until they went to bed as they slept nude. They had done this since they were small children. The subject had just turned 18 when the picture was taken. He and his siblings were raised by their grandparents and the picture sat on their family’s piano for several years until it was eventually put into an album.
Several years later, one of my male third cousins posted this picture somewhere on the internet and that is probably how you obtained it.
You may not be old enough to know this but back prior to the 1970s it was common in many families for male children and adolescents to be seen naked for certain reasons (such as what I’ve mentioned in this message) by the other members of the family including the females. In today’s more conservative society to a younger person this must seem impossible but that is the way it was back then in many families. This was the way it was certainly in my family and in some of the families of relatives and friends I knew. Back then it was considered abnormal for a male to be shy about nudity especially among his own family. As long as the male’s nudity was OK with the females who were present, a male was not supposed to be shy about his nudity. If a male was shy about nudity he was considered to be effeminate. It was a totally different way of thinking compared to today’s way of thinking about male nudity in our society. As only one other example of this way of thinking, prior to the 1970s in high schools and colleges that had swimming pools, the male students swam naked during P.E. classes and during practices. Nudity was mandatory for male students. I know this for certain because I experienced it myself in those times.
